About The Artwork

This drawing reflects my vision of the Cretan myth of the young Europa being abducted by the incarnated transformation of Zeus as a white bull. The early references to this tale, from Homer’s Iliad and Hesiod’s writings, describe one more of the love stories concerning Zeus and his differentiated marriages with goddesses. I started out imagining this image from my everyday concerns about the present day Europe and it’s circumstances; later I forgot these pressing political and historical ideas and concentrated more on the formal challenges of the drawing itself… I usually start out that way with these projects, trying to visualize and relate these figures with some sort of scenario, and then touch hand on paper and surrender myself to the physical job of involving my entire body in the drawing challenge… The massive weight of the animal, with its back to us in movement and slightly off-center, is balanced by the delicate lightness of the figure looking back as if to bid us farewell. Her look transmits a strange melancholia. The iconic figure of Europe, becomes here a somewhat human person with feelings and a sort of sad mystery. The feeling of a wide open space that sort of sucks you into its deep perspective, creates a sort of a balance with the proportions of this massive bull and its delicate rider. From its back, we concentrate more on the mass and the weight of the animal and less on the horns and the charging bull image we are used to. The blend of smudged areas of graphite with other more textured fast marks, pleased me when I finally said enough and stopped working on it.
