About The Artwork
This drawing is one of a set of four that I did earlier this year. The ground is a piece of an old sculpture plinth made of MDF and painted, that I dismantled and cut up into pieces of identical dimensions. The drawings are based on experiences I had of visiting my mother in a home for people with dementia. There were elderly people in various stages of the disease. It was a sad sight, and something about their vulnerability and loss of self-consciousness impressed itself upon me and I began to draw versions of them on these painted MDF boards. I realised that the forgotten, unravelling characters of these afflicted souls was well emphasised by the damaged, throwaway nature of the medium. I have recently sold one of the collection in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2018 in London.

"Although I state that much of my work stems from the imagery thrown up by depression, I would say that it is also the imagery of unconscious connection.Indeed the two are irrevocably entwined. It is no accident that the appearance of animal symbols and the use of bodily products such as hair, urine and blood is also influenced by my former work as a veterinary surgeon. Some time spent in psychoanalysis has helped me to illuminate these connections to find a personal mythology, which I believe connects to a universal meaning of what it is to be human. The `otherness` of animals, their power, vulnerability, unselfconsciousness and instinctual drives, and their relationship with us, are potent symbols of qualities we also have - qualities which we struggle with in our attempts to remain in control of ourselves and our society.
