This drawing was made at Marazion Marshes, close to where I live, which are freshwater, separated from the saltwater of the sea by only a small road. During stormy weather, the sea invades the marsh water. The birds, such as herons, which usually inhabit marshes, can be seen perching on the rocks on the beach, inhabiting both salt and fresh waters. The reeds are so dense, like a hide around the pools, there seems to be no way out of the water. A cross or an old signpost appeared in the drawing, signifying the past, or a warning perhaps, then a pontoon, offering a way out of the water. The drawing is on recycled, lightweight paper.

Gillian Cooper is a multi-disciplinary artist from London, now living in Cornwall, whose work encompasses drawing, print and installation, Gillian's artwork excavates the intangible, what is hidden or often overlooked in the landscape. She is drawn to the everyday, found or domestic material, object or process, to natural history and natural phenomena. In her work she seeks to express a wonder at the capacity of ordinary things to act as poignant metaphors for deeply personal and collective experiences and emotions. When explored with her particularly stark, semi-figurative language of mark making, these subjects become subtle symbolic devices to point to the wider social and political issues of migration and wildlife extinction. Gillian's works are hand made, the most direct and tactile gestural expression. Even prints in a series contain slight variation, referencing difference, the hand-made gesture and that which is human.
