The title here refers to koi fish I saw that inspired me to buy color ink (I'd been exclusively working with black Sumi ink). While I have yet to actually draw any koi with the inks, hummingbirds have made a few appearances - and so I refer to them as sky koi.

Hummingbirds are a recurring motif in my work; for me, they represent something or someone, easily spooked, that you are trying to lure closer. This piece is actually a rare case where the hummingbird surprises the figure by coming all on his own, unexpected, gifting some precious intimacy before flitting off again. The moment he's hovering right in her bosom is rare, delicate, beautiful.

It’s thrilling to discover a sprawling root system connecting thoughts that appeared to float like lily pads on the surface of a pond. Some ideas are associated by only a wispy tendril or two; others, entangled by dense dendritic ropes. Yet everything, once revealed as related, seems obviously and necessarily so. My artwork is my way of exploring these connections: the relationships between my physical and mental experiences, how they are often erroneously categorized as separate in kind, and how introspection and attention shows their unity. Through pen and ink I explore and celebrate the relationships between bodies, thoughts, things, language, music, and art. I was born and raised in Houston, Texas, where I went to the High School for Performing and Visual Arts. I got my BA at UT Austin in Linguistics and Philosophy, then came out west to study Developmental Psychology at USC. With an MA under my belt, I decided once again to focus on my art. One of my greatest discoveries has been that dichotomies - science & art; body & brain - are an illusion. This idea permeates my artwork, and today you can find me in LA drawing, playing tennis, tending to plants, or romping around in the great outdoors.
