About The Artwork

This drawing was the product of over a year’s worth of researching, sketching and drawing. I wanted to capture the essence of London, the extraordinary and ordinary aspects of this great city without laboring on the mundane, hence the playful moving of buildings and eliminations to suit the final condensed composition, very much in the ‘Capriccio’ style. I sought to achieve the sense of standing on an ordinary rooftop overlooking backyards and every day life, being able to observe the city’s highlights whilst being removed from them. These views do exist in London but I couldn’t find one that exactly suited my requirements of having the intimate foreground whilst retaining the detail needed for the middle ground and beyond. The actual inspirational viewpoint came from the top of the Centrepoint building, captured on a clear bright November morning with the South Downs in the distance. The drawing was started in November 2010 and finished in October 2011 and took a grand total of 240 hours.

Award winning British artist specialising in figurative landscapes and detailed black and white cityscapes. Born in 1970 in Merseyside, I moved to the South West to study at Bath College of Fine Art. As a young man I busked and painted my way across Europe, capturing the great buildings with chalked pavement pieces. In 2010 I won ‘The Bath Prize’ my first Major art prize. I gained national public recognition as a Finalist on the BBC2 series ‘Show Me The Monet’ and was invited to exhibit at The Mall Galleries, London. This then led to a place in the final of “The Young Masters Art Prize” mentored by art expert Roy Bolton. In Autumn 2012 I was awarded “The Sustainable Arts Foundation” Painting Prize, and have just won “The Bristol Art Prize” (Oct’13). I have lived in Merseyside, Ireland, Yorkshire and am now based in Bristol.
