The sign is empty Drawing

“Znak jest pusty” / “The sign is empty” - illustration was made after a chat with my friend. We were talking about people's perception of different motives in art. The question was how putting meaningless representation in the context of being an art object will change public perception. Putting an object in the category of art makes it more dangerous, this is unknown land. It brings to mind an anthropological category of the liminal phase. A thing was taken from one order and is transferred to another. Drawings, paintings and sculptures are marching from profane world of studio to sacred world of galleries, museums, and private collections. With new object there is just one problem. They need a priest, shaman... to bring them to the better world. Who is able to bear the responsibility of showing the way up or down (back to secular) to an object? Is it the role of curators, critiques, editors or of a collective? On this illustrations we can see two hares (symbols of wildness, sexuality, anxiety or whatever?), big red dots (is this allusion to Japan, tomatoes, clown nose?) mixed with black lines and a phrase “the sign is empty”. The phrase “the sign is empty” makes viewer doubt about meaning of things, is there still any meaning?
