About The Artwork

The starting point for this and other drawings comes from looking at artefacts in museums across Europe. The motivating theme for using these artefacts is to acknowledge damage and questioning the balance between what is noticeable and tolerated damage and what is not. Many of the artefacts found in museums were created for veneration and worship, each having a significant meaning to the culture not only as an object but also though association to a particular cultural narrative. Associations that are often evident in the cultural vandalism of the artefacts when deemed out of alignment with a particularly ideology or thought. The years of damage either deliberate or by accident etched on the surfaces of these artefacts is often seen as a norm, they are old the level of damage is appropriate. It is generally expected that these artefacts will have missing limbs. For me there is a link to be made here that echoes the current thinking arounds environmental damage, it seems that a norm has developed that makes environmental damage tolerated and a given. The drawings are a form of study on these themes, looking closely at ever scratch, chip, missing leg and finger.

My current practice uses ancient philosophy as a guide to nature and the cosmos. Plus, an enduring fascination with antiquity, which has resulted in extensive study trips to ancient sites and museums across Europe. The work centres around layers of destruction and ruin within objects and places. It loosely explores the fragility and impermanence of the past as an allegory for contemporary environmental destruction.
