About The Artwork

The art-work belongs to a format named VOLUME and started in 2009. Such as a display, the artwork synthesizes two separate viewpoints of the old Castle (Piccolomini Castel in Ortucchio, that is the site of the exhibition). The artist connects the present and the past in oder to provide the spectators with an image of the original conformation of the fortress. Surrounded by the waters of a lake, water is the third element of the artwork in the form of a collage of images of water. By means of technological tools (such as google street-view) and historiographical references, the artist builds a new image of Ortucchio. Through an operation of juxtaposition between images of its history and contemporary newspaper fragments, the artwork tries to reshape the common perception of small towns like Ortucchio. The ultimate intent is to convey the idea that, notwithstanding their spatial decentralisation from bigger cultural and productive centres, small towns need to be revaluated as centres of potentially cultural vitality.

Barbara Esposito's practice is grounded on a deep and inmost interest in the concept of space, initially reproduced through evocative paintings of interiors, afterwards analysed more scientifically via site-specific installations. Currently, her research is shifting towards political themes and new means of investigation such as 2.0 platforms, with the intention of identifying new forms of "inhabiting" where life and aesthetics are strictly related.
