About The Artwork

When in 1978 two popes succeeded one after the other, I was a child and attended the first grade, but I remember vividly a drawing: Pope John Paul II on the balcony gave his first blessing; under a written "Viva John Paul II "(I thought it would be John Paul I, but he was elected on September 3 and since the schools started later in Sicily could not be him). I asked my mother to find the notebook in which there was the design, but I had no luck. It was my first book. Maybe it was too well-preserved or has been lost forever, thrown by my sister, who knows when, in one of his rampage by spring cleaning. However, to review a pope, who gives his first blessing, I had to wait many years. Looking out the window below him there is still the tapestry with the coat of arms of the predecessor. Jesus said the truth will set you free and the dogmas of the Catholic Church, repre-sented by its highest authority, the pope, the highest expression of truth. But the dogmatic truths common to hear are not perceived as points of freedom, but obliga-tions of the faith. My Catholic upbringing could easily argue on this point and prove otherwise, but this would have little to do with the point that this tells us free. The representation that goes beyond their role dogmatic, the pop imagery of mass com-munication is the real free work. The affection that binds me then the two figures also justifies the irony in the title: Papa Arazzo (Arazzo as the tapestry of a recent beatification), Pope Razy (nickname for Ratzinger). Like many other characters in the Pope enters into our daily Germans, became a person of the house and when there is familiar nicknames are common.

FEDERICO COZZUCOLI +393473327194 federicocozzucoli@gmail.com www.federicocozzucoli.net Federico Cozzucoli born in Messina in 1972. He left Sicily at nineteen to begin theologic studies, which concludes in 1999, earning a bachelor's degree in theology at the Pontificial Lateran University in Rome. Subsequently, discovered his vocation as an artist, tries to mediate theology with the art and enrolled at the Pontificial Gregorian University, where he studied the themes of sacred art and graduated Operator for Cultural Heritage of the Church. At the same time he attended the School of Nude at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and he had his first exhibition experiences. His main artistic expression is the performance, which combines the experience of liturgical ritual of the Catholic Church - which is no longer actively and constantly practiced as a time - with syncretistic elements of the pop culture and high culture, reflecting the elements that characterize contemporary Catholicism: the popular devotion and the high theology that confronts the world of great philosophical culture. These issues, treated in a non-confessional way, are the subject of his videos, photographs, paintings and digital rework, sculptures, but is necessary to reaffirm that the majority of works come to the performance or develop as a result of these. For same years now he spent his winters in Calasetta where, in a quiet environment full of sea and nature, he have occasion to meditate and deepen the themes of his work.
