About The Artwork

Inspired by Pixar's "Typestry" a 3D application made decades ago that could transform and deform text in unimaginable I was inspired to recreate the effect. Typestry was the first implementation of the Renderman Engine on the Apple platform. This image emulates the behavior of the Application, the forms are fonts that spell out the word, "New York", that would be my home town. The letter forms are contorted and twisted by generative algorithms know by 3D artist as noise shaders. The Letter forms are converted into 3D geometry, the geometry is subdivided into a fine mesh. This will allow the noise shaders to deform the geometry to greater or lesser degrees based on brightness values. A noise shader is made up of light and dark values that form patterns. the patterns are intended to mimic patterns found in nature, wood, cellular, geometric and the roughness of surfaces. I use these values to drive the shape and form of the 3D letter mesh. What was once a simple vector letter form now becomes a malleable clay. Using a 3D camera and applying metallic materials, I put myself into this world and photograph the results.

My name is Jerome Santiago, I am of Puerto Rican decent. I was Born in Brooklyn New York and are a self taught multimedia digital artist. I grew up in a fairly challenging environment in New York's Chelsea Elliot Houses. It was and still is a contrast to it's surrounding neighborhood "wealthy Chelsea" as I called it, my inspiration to "get out of the hood" was the peace needed to focus to create and symbol that floated outside my window at distance, the Empire State Building, it was like a dingy in the ocean of challenges around me, both inspiring and intimidating simultaneously. I freelance as a 3D Branded Environments Designer. Its a pretty big jump from my origins, guess what? I am still jumping. Today, like so many yesterdays, I am still learning my craft albeit on more complex levels, fine tuning my skills. My blessing and curse to be in state of perpetual learning, it is how I grow as an artist.
