We all seek to find a sense of belonging in this world. Instinctively everyone needs to feel like they are a part of something bigger than themselves. We need a tribe. Finding a sense of belonging is often achieved through ritual and symbolism. My own personal iconography and symbolism is the departure point in these works of art. They are paintings and drawings of shields either literal or symbolic. They can be considered talismans to protect the bearer from harm. They also are seen to represent the polar opposite, flowers of peace. The lotus has been associated with meditation and spirituality since the beginning of time. Both the shield and the flower offer protection from the world around us. Each drawing I create is unique. There are no two exactly alike. Like this work of art, each painting and drawing tells a story and is part of a larger more complex series of paintings and drawings. This mixed media drawing is done on paper. The edge of the paper is deckled on the bottom edge. I have used my washout technique in this work which causes the paper to be worn in some areas. The work is signed and comes accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. Title: Lotus Bud Size: 11 x 11.75 inches Medium: Mixed media on paper

Stewart Fletcher’s paintings, drawings and works on paper have been the subject of numerous solo and group exhibitions over the past forty years. His paintings, drawings and works on paper are part of several private international collections in over 20 countries and in 36 American States. Known for his fascination with the human body, Fletcher explores various concepts beyond the representational image. The great equalizer he believes is when one's clothing is removed. All identifiers and societal statuses disappear and the real person appears. Fletcher does not believe that his work is erotic, however some people do because of their social, religious and regional upbringing. He often uses humour and satire to convey his views on the world around him..
