About The Artwork
Using a mixture of pre-used patterned and coloured papers handwoven into a warp comprising wool, linen, cotton and silk, this piece was inspired by the memory of a summer flower border. A riot of colours, flowers vying for attention, yet subtle in their language. Just as a memory becomes hazy and dreamlike, this piece conveys the feeling of summer as an abstract expression, transporting the viewer to warm summer days. I work primarily in weave, using the loom as a tool to blend materials into a visual abstract woven image. I see weaving as a metaphor for memory, and the impermanence of textiles reflecting the fleeting nature of memories. The pre-used papers are cut into strips and then fed by hand between the warp whilst on the loom using a zig zag twill pattern.
