About The Artwork

Based on Vincent van Gogh's “Beach at Scheveningen in Stormy Weather (1882) and Self-portrait (1888) ". For this piece I used Van Gogh’s fascination and love of the natural world and his fascination of Japanese woodblock art and tried to merge the different styles into a visual which looked slightly surreal. Hair and head are illustrated as a combination of ocean waves and the character resembles a flattened perspective of a fish. This perspective was often used in Japanese art during the Edo period. I tried to marry old with new but keeping an organic feel to the piece. The artwork was created as part of the Saatchi Art "The Other Avatars" NFT project. The project was a huge divergence for me, but this drove me to creatively explore in new and very exciting ways. I tried to marry old with new and understand as much as possible about what we believe to have held meaning for the artist, what fed and drove him…To do this I isolated myself for 3 weeks during the early stage of the creative process in order to truly inhabit another world. Van Gogh was most inspired by Japanese woodblock prints. This influence was so strong that Van Gogh’s even changed his style and subject matter. He was particularly taken by the Ukiyo-e style which were in essence pictures of an imagined floating fleeting world. This work alluded to the illusionary nature of the natural world… Woodblock prints gave Japanese culture a means of expression combining perception with culture and philosophy of life. Like my own work pieces show a reverence for nature. More surreal than realistic. For the creative process, images were digitally manipulated into the different in layers Just as in the age old process of woodblock prints which involved 4 stages of a process and different craftsmen, I digitally layered different photographs, sketches and experimental pieces from the studio on a blank canvas. Many were Images of the the ocean, the sky and textures. This was completed in Photoshop in order to combine the various elements into a unique digital file. Throughout the process there was a conscious intention to attempt to incorporate the artists’ original style or source of inspiration: Bold contour lines, prominent diagonals, a high or absent horizon, a unique way or representing space with emphasis on foreground and background and giving prominence to the natural world. Maya Almeida Araujo has exhibited globally and had sites structurally adapted for her pieces. She is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose practice considers art as a platform for connection. With a focus on the element of water, the work floats between the spheres of still and moving images, artistic installation, and site specific work. Navigating the confluence of nature, art and technology, her work has developed through critical engagement with her own mind and body in a way that examines fundamental questions of how human beings relate to themselves and to their environment. Adopting a unique approach to each work, Maya draws on personal experience, culture and ancient philosophy to create visceral immersive experiences. An invitation to step into an imaginary world in a way that is both sensorial and profoundly intimate. It asks how we can come together and ultimately, heal. London is home but Maya was born in Lisbon to Portuguese/Belgian/German parents. She studied Biology at Imperial College, London. Her artistic path was one of auto-didacticism with training at Central Saint Martins, with best in class equipment manufacturers and under some of the greatest image makers such as Tim Flach and Lois Greenfield. The work consistently pushes technological boundaries in search for a truer realisation of the intended experience. Recent projects have involved developing custom rigs for film-making in the open ocean, multi-screen editing at ground breaking levels of resolution, colour depth, motion, interactive animation environments and producing hyper-textured ambisonic soundscapes. All in partnership with a collective of like-minded artistic collaborators and craftspeople without losing sight of her truth.
