About The Artwork

A row of San Francisco terrace houses caught in crisp early winter morning light. Structure is kept to simple geometric shapes filled with thick strokes of heavily textured paint. As with most places in the Bay Area, power lines are an omnipresent and highly visible part of the architecture. I was tempted at first to paint this scene without them, thinking they feel like a blight on the environment. But the more you live here, the less you see them - and in fact, I rather feel they add to compositions as oppose to detract. Stand back to around 10 feet from this 30 x 30 painting, and the composition pulls together to form a fairly photographic, ephemeral, view of urban life.

I’m pretty sure I could draw long before I learned to walk. Art for me was my calling, my passion and as a creative director, it’s also been my job. The great thing about advertising is the amount of world-class creative people you meet, from fellow ideas people, to illustrators, writers, photographers and film makers - pioneers who channel every waking moment in perfecting their craft. It’s inspiring working with people who care about every single pixel, stroke, sound and word they put their names too. I’ve been ludicrously spoilt in my career - travelling extensively and soaking up the culture in some extraordinary places. So, when in 2019 we were lucky enough to be given the chance to relocate from London to California, we grasped the opportunity. The astonishing light and picturesque scenes around our home in Los Gatos, lured me to my paints - and I began to feverishly produce canvases in every spare moment I could muster. I’ve evolved a style that distances the viewer from the subject, applying incandescent California light to London greys. Drawing heavily from my graphic design background, I use a strong graphical element in my composition and the finest materials available. In September 2021 I left my job to make the work I love, and bring joy into people’s homes.
