About The Artwork
I often sketch at night in places around me I see everyday, looking down over the bay and across the water is one of my favorite. Anytime the moon is in the sky and bright enough to light up the world around me I see in my many different drawings just how much my imagination and my mood defines the view in front of me. It seems like the view of the city and the bridge is constantly changing and none more so when it's shrouded in fog and faintly lit by the moon in the deepest part of the night. Around that time the city sleeps, the highway turns off, the BART cars have stopped running and the railway is silent. This brief quiet period in a city of constant movement and overwhelming energy gives me the chance of "seeing" the natural beauty of the area that once was unspoiled by humans. These rare glimpses of the bay have inspired some of my favorite artwork ...I hope this painting speaks to you thank you for looking

Matthew McDermott, b. 1981 NY, is an artist living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mat struggles with mental illness and epilepsy on a day to day basis but has found his purpose in the creative arts in the form of painting, stained glass and custom woodworking. Prior to 2018 his work was available only through a commission basis and resides in private collections throughout the United States. In 2015 he was fortunate enough to gain a patron that funded the body of his work now available in his portfolio. "My artwork has become my only way to find myself again. Life is good when I'm painting and creating and I'm happy because I'm doing what I love. When things are bad I focus on the fact that my art is there waiting for me to get better and that it is something to hang on to when everything seems so horrible and normal life feels like a dream or a story that can't possibly be real."
