About us (Not for sale) Painting

This painting is based on the cartoon done by the Italian Renaissance painter Raphael Sanzio, in 1510. The cartoon being a charcoal preparatory drawing served as a point of reference for his work in the famous fresco which is best known as THE SCHOOL OF ATHENS, and done for the Vatican Apostolic Palace. Amazed by his cartoon which revealed the master’s extraordinary figure composition and the use of light and shadow, I decided to pay tribute to both Raphael and Greece for having an academy of figures of thought that represents the knowledge on which our civilization was built on. By focusing on a small section of the cartoon, I discovered that a group of figures representing young students shown around Archimedes, show interesting social behavior patterns that young people still use today. They wear sophisticated sandals while adults walk bare feet as a clear sign of belonging to high status families. Dressed in rich ornamented garments which were arranged differently, as if to make some kind of generational statement. One of them, wears a lasso in his hair, possibly for the same reason young people use piercings or tattoos. 500 years apart, and the same behavior patterns still prevail. For these reasons, and the involvement of Greece’s academic figures of knowledge, I named this painting, “About us”.
