About The Artwork

Synthetic canvas extra Extra-fine acrylic painting, moldings (spears and helmets) and metal leaves with 24 carats gold This episode of the Trojan War illustrates an amphora made by Exekias (sixth century BC), who was an innovative painter and potter having lived at a slightly later period to Homer (late eighth century BC). Only eleven works signed by the artist have reached us. Others were assigned to him. The most famous of his artworks, the one that inspired me the work you see above is exposed to the Vatican. The structure of the drawing is particularly interesting : a half circle formed by the two characters and two lines eyes-spears converging down. This results in a very strong structure, contrasting with the peaceful activity of two Greeks warriors who nevertheless didn’t separated from their weapons, their shields framing the scene. With this painting, I tried to underline the whole structure with colors that didn’t exist on the original artwork, with use of materials that didn’t exist at the sixth century BC. So the challenge was to work on a two thousands years masterpiece and, by the use of our materials, make it modern, or to be more precise, post-modern.
