Painting is twenty panels, 2' x 2' each. Part of my "City Tropics" series which classifies subjects in warmer climes as "Urban Edens" and tropical subjects in colder climes as "Glass Houses." I paint those momentary interactions of light with tropical plants that create lightest lights and darkest darks -- luminosity filtering from above, shining from behind, crosshatching, reflecting, glowing. My subject matter, like the shadow of a leaf upon a leaf, is a fragile reality -- always on the brink of transforming, constantly in a state of becoming. Nonetheless it has all the power of light to make us feel, as well as see. My paintings are executed on a scale that allows us to experience, rather than just see them, by engaging our physiological reactions to color and light. Though representational, my paintings refer to abstract beauty. For example, the progression of the fronds in the structure of a palm echoes the progressions of sound in the music of J.S. Bach or the mathematics of the bell curve.

"I paint elusive interactions of light with tropical plants, a fragile reality, yet with all of light's power to make us feel, as well as see." Current painting series is called "City Tropics." Like Henri Rousseau in Paris, my experience of the tropical has been almost entirely in cities. Born Detroit, MI. Grew up in NYC metro area. BFA Pratt Institute, 1968. 1972-85 lived in Manhattan working in advertising and publishing and actively following the art scene. In 1985 moved to Connecticut, becoming Service Ombudsman for The Hartford Courant, daily newspaper. In 1991 moved to Florida: Working with former Apollo 11 aerospace engineers, at Northrop Grumman in Melbourne from 1992-2000. In 1993 resumed painting. In 1995 came to my signature image: tropical plants interacting with light. Exhibited extensively. Awarded signage position in the Art Center of Vero Beach Juried Exhibition in 2000. Hosted a cable TV art talk show, served a term as president of a 250-member arts organization and was a contributing writer for a monthly magazine. In April 2001 moved back to NYC, to paint full time. By the end of 2003 was supporting myself on sales of my paintings. Over eighty-five percent of my paintings, done since 1993, are in private collections. Art Red Spot Gallery, Westport CT, 2004-5 I enjoy interacting with potential collectors. An aerospace engineer once told me looking at art is like a hurricane because it is an exchange of energy. I put energy into the artwork and the artwork energizes the viewer. The handmade is especially beneficial in our increasingly virtual world. marylbullock.com, postcardsfromtherails.com
