Erika Acrylic on Box Canvas 14” X 10” Erica is German lady, but not quite the normal, average, everyday German. Highly educated, a Copyright-lawyer, a sailor and a painter, she lives in a town close to the Polish border. Each year, mid-summer, she and friends hire a yacht from Trieste and sail the Mediterranean for a few weeks or rest and recreation. It took a while to find out her professional credentials as rarely does any conversation go so slow between us as to come around to such mundane subjects. It seems she is fond of this little island. Lately she had been flying over for occasional stress-relieving breaks in winter and spring as well. She drops in for a spot of painting in the villages, on the sea off the steep cliffs. We met at my usual stop in the middle of my daily walk. I stop in for tea and toast and do some sketch or paint on my favorite table at ‘Duncans’ Café.’ Generally fishermen give me their unasked opinions and suggestions on how to improve my work, as well as pearls of wisdom on how to make a fortune selling the paintings. That one day a lanky, weathered, graceful lass wordlessly replaced them leaning over my shoulder holding a glass of beer. She had the smell sea-mist mixed with the scent of soaped skin wrapped in starched denim. I asked her to take a seat at my table, she preferred to stand to which I suggested I preferred her to sit as, being summer, the condensation from her glass was dripping ice cold onto my neck. I thought of her last week, it must be time for her to return. Perhaps next week, maybe the one after that. Funny how some people just intrude in one’s mind and won’t go away.
