About The Artwork

In a city, only vestiges of the natural world remain. I've become an urban botanist of sorts by collecting specimens of weeds that grow in my neighborhood, taking them back to my studio, and painting them. I find these under-appreciated plants to be quite beautiful. Anything that you pay attention to becomes important, and to me, these are therefore quite important weeds. In this spirit, I love Albrecht Durer's "The Large Heath." Unfortunately, I was very allergic to this subject matter and couldn't keep it in a pot inside for any longer than it took to paint. This painting is made from egg tempera, which uses egg yolk as a binding agent for an emulsion of pigment and water. It lends the colors a richness and luminosity absent in watercolor and predates oil painting.
