Amelioration is the latest large painting fresh off Olivia Peake’s easel as she completes the first year of her Masters at the Birmingham School of Art, it is also part of a new series of work that are influenced by the the changes and modernisation of the city of Birmingham. Citing aspects of neo-futurism found in the city’s recently opened Grand Central station, Amelioration also turns to interior spaces, geometric forms that suggest rooms and hallways that present endless possibilities. The scene moves with the viewer, changing at every different view and angle, to the point one can get sort of lost amongst the neon passageways and avenues. Peake notes that “this constant flux and change is something Birmingham as a city is undergoing and growing as the country’s ‘second city’”.

Olivia Peake is a British artist known for her architecture-inspired paintings, drawings and installations. Olivia uses geometry, light and line to create abstract, illusionistic spaces. Her canvases are swathed in colourful shards of reflected light - and the effect is at once soothing and visually exciting. We love the way the artist offsets the colourful geometry in her compositions with bold, clean lines.
