Wash painting on paper of Amiens Cathedral floor, Amiens France Amiens Floor has been exhibited in 2013 at Lyme Art Association Gallery, Lyme, CT, in the "81st Annual Juried Exhibition of the Hudson Valley Art Association", Jurors: Helen Rudy, C.A. Jarez, Ed Broussard, Rick Daskam; at Ridgefield Guild of Artists, Ridgefield, CT, in "Resolution"; in 2012 at Easton Library, Easton CT, in "Art in the Country, ", Juror, Daniel Mark Duffy; and in 2012 at Blue Door Gallery, Yonkers, NY, in "4th BDAA Members Juried Exhibition", Juror: Ellen Keiter, Curator of Contemporary Art, Katonah Museum of Art. Sometimes I work from photos of architecture with surface embellishments. In the photos, the architecture, or “ground”, becomes an element which can influence or distort the applied decorative “figure” when recorded by the camera. But it is also the photographer’s choices of format, angle, lighting, and choice of film that can influence or distort the architecture in the resulting photo. From this I paint, as objectively (abstractly) and dutifully as possible, the photo’s content, without trying to understand or distinguish which is object, pattern, light, or shade, but recording the confluence or juxtaposition as it is observed. With “Amiens Floor” my goal was to record both the architectural and decorative information as equally, allowing unpainted paper to become as much a part of the composition as the applied paint. The task was to not distinguish between structure, pattern, light, or shade, not to necessarily understand which feature was being addressed, but to assemble the values and colors like cells, or like a jig-saw puzzle in which the edges are not cleanly cut. The use of wash was ideal for this. The lack of true lines seemed in keeping with the knowledge that, whether relying on the vision and perspective of human observation, unbiased mechanical record, or both, that light and dark can distort what we think we know to be true, be it fundamental or superficial.

I grew up in rural Ohio, where in the 5th grade my art teacher began encouraging me to draw. While earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drawing and painting at The Ohio State University, I was awarded a Ford Foundation Grant. I then moved to NYC to attend New York University, spent a semester abroad, painting, drawing, and sculpting in Venice, Italy, and earned a Master's degree in studio art. The New York metropolitan area has been my home ever since. I now live and work in Yonkers with my husband, John, who provides invaluable support, advice, and carpentry skills.
