About The Artwork
My work takes inspiration from a mother (Mother Earth) who tries to protect his offspring - a grown man in fetal position. His pose symbolizes a sense of suffering and weakness. We curl up when we are cold or in pain. The man is light for her. He is easy for her to lift for he does not bear his weight upon her. They live harmoniously together. Indigenous people were here first - way before Western men changed the landscape and the culture of the nation. IPs took care of the land and the forests and used its natural resources sustainably for centuries. Today, IPs face challenges from urbanization, deforestation, poverty, malnutrition, cultural influences, from people that exploit them and do not protect and uphold their rights, and from those who want to take away their lands.
