About The Artwork

Inspired by the art and heritage of ancient Mesopotamia (today iraq), this is a contemporary interpretation of a winged human headed bull. These creatures were worshipped in ancient Iraq, were considered demi-gods and were placed at the entrances of temples and the homes of important people. They are a symbol of strength and miracles, magic and culture. This lamassu is configured using contemporary photography of London as seen by a pedestrian in a residential area. It remains proud and dignified despite the red bird near by.

Alanbari is a curator, visual artist & art advisor who anchors her work in what she learned whilst qualifying as an architect in 2002. Over the last decade, her experience has been about bridging the art world and the general public through exhibitions and helping art collectors grow their understanding and acquisitions. This complements her personal fine art practice. Iraqi born but brought up in France & the UK, her language of choice is universal imagery based on metaphor. Through fiction and visual stories, she comments on contemporary issues relative to gender, current geopolitical affairs and how portraiture can reflect what the psyche is about. The human body, newspaper excerpts and animals are key to her work in their power to exercise a universal affiliation with the general public regardless of cultural barriers. Alanbari’s love of learning led to postgraduate degrees from Chelsea College of Art, The London School of Economics and the Ecole Speciale d’Architecture Paris. Learning and teaching go hand in hand, bringing her to design a curriculum called “Self Development Through Art”. This she periodically teaches at The Saatchi Gallery in London’s Duke of York Square. Alanbari has exhibited and directed shows at several cultural institutions of international renown, including the Saatchi Gallery, Christie’s Auction House and The Royal College of Art in London. She is currently working on an immersive multimedia exhibition. ‘Gilgamesh’ is a contemporary narration of the ancient epic. Tickets available on Eventbrite or by emailing me asmaa@babylon-art.com
