About The Artwork

"Archipelago" is a 48 x 192" oil painting created on 4 pieces of 1/2" plywood supported on the back by two, separate 48" x 96" square metal tube frames. The painting was done while I was attending a residency in Fogo Island, Newfoundland, working in the iconic 'black box' studio designed by Todd Saunders. The painting was in fact, done directly onto the plywood boards that had been added to the walls to provide smooth work surfaces. "Archipelago" is partially inspired by the natural whorles within the plywood which reminded me of the tidal pools and dramatic geology I'd witnessed around the island. The painting connects to the ongoing inquiry into 'boundlessness' which I have within my practice, yet here it is seen through the lens of the macro-micro magnificence of the Newfoundland topography and geology: Fogo Island is substantially a mass of rock sitting in the Atlantic ocean off of the East Coast of Canada, and it also presents a compelling and varied archipelago on which tidal pools, cracked and variegated volcanic outcrops, and basalt mountains insert themselves across a time-worn landscape resulting from eons of seismic upheaval. "Archipelago" is an investigation and homage to this world rendered as an expansive, contemporary painting. Availability Note: The painting is on rental until June 22nd, 2018 after which it is part of a solo show October 5-21st, 2018 in Toronto. Following that it is fully available.

Canadian multi-disciplinary artist Marian Wihak was born and raised in the city of Regina, in the great plains of South Central Saskatchewan, and lives and works in Toronto, Ontario. Originally trained in theatre design, and with a long-standing career as a film production designer, Marian is also a visual artist with an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art, Media and Design from OCADU. For many years the focus of her visual art practice has been creating evocative, large-scale oil paintings that chart nocturnal lightscapes both rural and urban, inner psychological landscapes, and dynamic weather systems. In recent years she also builds on her familiarity with and understanding of spatial responsiveness and metaphoric narrative, integrating her design and visual art practices to develop new possibilities in immersive and experiential environments. This serves her overarching interest in the overlapping perceptive and phenomenological aspects of chaos, the sublime and duration. Marian has been the recipient of numerous nominations and awards for her theatre and film design work and as a visual artist has being supported by the Canada Council and the Ontario Arts Council. She was also a Finalist in the prestigious RBC Painting Competition (2001). Her work can has been exhibited across Canada and can be found in private and corporate collections in North America.
