The axis mundi (also cosmic axis, world axis, world pillar, columna cerului, center of the world, world tree), in religion or mythology, is the world center or the connection between Heaven and Earth. The face and the hands depicted are a signature style of rulers found on carved stelae among the Mayan ruins of Copán and Quiriguá. The hands hold up a double headed serpent - commonly a metaphor for the milky way galaxy. On the left and right side are head variant glyphs, each stand for a unit of time. One 'kin' (head of man) refers to the cycle of one day. One 'tun' (head of bird) refers to the cycle of one year.
