About The Artwork
"Bars" 2020 Gold leaf, acrylic, canvas 40/40cm Kaliya Ka works predominantly in the field of painting and calls herself an industrial painter. She gets inspired by architecture and big cities. “The imaginary constructions are places that I have seen live and that have settled deep within my subconscious. Now, they are awaking and rising to the surface so they could slide over the canvases. Shining bright and ready to devour every colour, stifle it, or breathe life into it. To this binary materialisation, I also added precious metals. They are not real, but their presence is eloquently convincing. At the same time glossy, but also a delusively unreal background to the constructions. The exhibition is built up of landscapes and architectural collaborations between interior and exterior spaces. The sweet challenge I faced was to build a space on the base of these shiny sheets, a space that evokes a home.”

Kaliya Kalacheva is an MA graduate from the National Academy of Art in Sofia, Bulgaria. In 2011 she won the Prize for Promising Young Artist from the Edmond Demirdjian Foundation. She was nominated for the 2012 MOST Award. In 2017 Kaliya won the International Artist Recognition at the Women in the Arts Awards as part of the Celebrating the Genius of Women Exhibition in Orlando, Florida, USA. In 2021 Kaliya wins the Award of the participants for painting in the National Exhibition - a competition for painting and sculpture. 2020 brings her the Prize for an emerging artist at the Burgas Biennale for Contemporary art, Burgas, Bulgaria. Her paintings are part of the collections of the Hugo Voeten Art Centre, Belgium; the Luciano Benetton Collection, Italy; the National Art Gallery and the Sofia City Art Gallery, Bulgaria. Kaliya Kalacheva was a resident artist in the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, France in 2014 and in the Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus, Schwandorf, Germany in 2016.
