These days most of my paintings are created for a show, or a commission, or a charity that the work is slotted for. But this piece came from pure inspiration. I was saving the large canvas for a special occasion, and when I found a window in my schedule, I pounced. The main goal was to have fun. I wanted to just go big and free. In the end this beautiful cat emerged with a gaze that seems to embody some kind of soft yet potentially dangerous awareness. It was my wife's idea to name her Bastet, after the Egyptian cat-faced goddess, which I found quite fitting as she was known for the mysterious wisdom behind her eyes. Although Bastet might swing between good and bad tendencies, I see her in this painting as a fierce friend. Someone who you are glad is on your side.

Max Neutra is best known for his ongoing bunny street art project. Conceived as whimsical idea created at a live painting event in Barcelona, he will tell you that the bunnies have since evolved into a study of space and motion, a meditation on achieving balance, and a pursuit of the perfect curve. Having spent years painting publicly at events across several countries, Max developed his own signature technique. Building up layers of acrylic paint as if it were watercotor, he creates images that have depth and motion seemingly contained within carefully honed borders. In his work, he often celebrates the aesthetically pleasing lines of industrial design, explores the evolution of music, and revels in the natural satisfaction of coming face to face with another species. Today, Max continues to foster a spirit of discovery while raising his daughter and creating art in Santa Fe, NM.
