Beyond the Brush Painting

The work was INSPIRED BY the paintings of Matisse and Magritte. Beyond the Brush started out as a bunch of abstract shapes based on an image of myself standing in front of a mirror. Though mostly abstract, the drawing roughly resembled a human female. To make the image more abstract (and as an homage to Magritte) I substituted a paintbrush for the face. Through the many compositional changes that followed, the paintbrush held its place as the anchor of the piece. As much as I love painting precise visual detail, in this work (which is part of a series in which I am marrying abstraction to figuration) I left some of the interior detail and negative spaces as colorful abstractions while making the figure more clearly defined. I was striving for balance between the abstract and figurative elements. I hope VIEWERS WILL FEEL enchanted by my whimsical handling of everyday interior and exterior surroundings in the painting and will have a new more romantic/poetic view of their own surroundings My favorite MEDIUM is acrylic paint for it's brightness and versatility. I can work wet on wet with it but also take advantage of its quick drying when creating multiple layers of paint. The SUBJECT of the painting is me but I am also a witness to the scene as the painter. Magritte used himself as witness in the same way and it has always fascinated me The STYLE of the painting is my very own which tightly and accurately depicts the subject but I interject the rendering with abstract substitutions as stand ins for the various objects. An example of this is, of course, a brush for a face. It seems fitting for a painter, doesn't it?
