Black & Blue Acrylic On Canvas 30 x 30 inches 2020 Black & Blue is a portrait of the iconic Billie Holiday. She was known for her distinctive singing voice and major contribution to the Jazz and Swing era. Billie Holiday is an ongoing inspiration and credit to many legends after her time. The title of the piece refers to the battles Billie went through as a Black Woman in America and the Blues she so transparently expressed through her music. No matter how Black or Blue, Billie would leave you in awe with ease. “You can be up to your boobies in white satin, with gardenias in your hair and no sugar cane for miles, but you can still be working on a plantation.” -Billie Holiday This piece is finished with a matt varnish. I believe my work looks best away from direct light as it compliments the shadows and allows the subject to emerge.

Variety Brown is a London based artist whose current focus is portraiture. These pieces are painted on canvas using black and white acrylic paint with inspiration having been taken from black and white photography as well as to add a classic feel. The end result is intended to display a strong and bold image that draws you in and furthermore sheds insight into the background of the icon.
