About The Artwork

Carrion Oil and Palette knife 01/2015 101cm x81cm Carrion by frith Johnson an immediately dark and meaningful painting seems to shed a huge light on the artist’s life and ideas. The idea of the painting portrays the idea of almost cannibalism which would suggest to the viewer that the artist views herself and perhaps her life as self-destructive, almost as if it is such a struggle to work as a team and the underlying message is that perhaps when times get stressful even you will turn on yourself. The colours chosen by the artist gives connotations of darkness and show perhaps that there is no way out of the situation, this also could relate to the artists life and showing that she was not in an exultant state of mind and spirit. Perhaps the artist views this painting as hopeful and almost as if the crow that is being attacked represents previous burdens and thus ridding her from grievances. Another connotation of the painting could be perhaps related to family or friends and even though everything may seem normal and portrays the idea of standardization, there will always be a weaker member thus shedding truth on the idea of superficiality within the bonds of a family/friends.

I am an artist and ceramic designer working in Hampshire England. I originally come from South Africa where I studied Fine art for 4 Years and then studied Ceramic design for another 2 years. I work using thick impasto oil paint to create a feeling that the objects that I paint are more sculptural and have a life of their own. I have an interest in the interplay of colours between objects in the painting and work to create an energy and union of these objects through paint.
