About The Artwork

Caution, filters! is an exploration of the world of social media and the effect it has on our bodies and how we view our bodies, especially as women. We all know what is happening: retouched images with a variety of filters are being posted on Facebook, instagram and the like. These are not necessarily of celebrities, that's what makes the whole issue even more scary. As you look at them, you may think, oh, this is how this girl looks like. And as a young woman, or a woman of any age, you are driven into depression for not being up to the standards; or you are driven to the surgical room for a botox injection. In this painting, I explore the danger of our bodies becoming so commercial that we resort to surgical interventions and computerised add-ons to continue believing in their genuine beauty and usefulness.

My passion for art started at an early age, while experiencing the changes in colors and style with the fall of the Soviet Union. I began painting and drawing more intensely around 2005 when I moved to the US for university. Although I studied biochemistry and economics, I spent my summers at the university’s arts centre. When I quit my corporate job in London, I rediscovered immense pleasure and relaxation in painting, an activity that soon developed into a passionate calling. I continue to learn and experiment with acrylics, paste and charcoal. Being a fan of hot and sunny weather, which is rare in London, I use mostly bright colors to transform a blank canvas into abstract images inspired by everyday experiences.
