About The Artwork

Titles are useful, although I rarely think in terms of words or subject matter which working. Words just get in the way of a current of onrushing impulses and feelings that I have the need to capture in some form or another. I worked in a museum that had a colossal sized Henry Moore sitting in a reflecting pool, the image was appropriately dramatic as the museum was dedicated to the performing arts. There were other great works about the campus that played on my unconscious over the years. Now many decades later I find myself in s search for form and mass and place and composition in some ways much like a sculptor always looking for a point of balance, a tipping point or a point of no return. I rotate the image adding or subduing or subtracting line, shapes, tones, adding pieces of information where needed. The whole affair is really quite insane as it depends on my inner sense of who I am, what I have seen and experienced, and it doesn't come with a user's guide for dummies either.

There is a lot of amazing and beautiful work posted on this Saatchi Web Gallery, and I am happy to have my work on view here. I am one of those humans that have an ingrained, physical need to make images. Luckily I had a wise mother and encouraging teachers who recognized that aspect of my personality and helped me realize my early dreams of becoming a professional artist. After graduating from Pratt Institute with a degree in fine art and art education, and in order to make ends meet, I pursued and built a fascinating career as a graphic designer which also included a simultaneous career as a design instructor those gigs lasted for almost fifty years. Just to stop and note, Pratt was a Bauhaus oriented art school, where the spirit of Modernism took front rank, and where I learned to peer into many disciplines painting, photography, sculpture, industrial design, typography, and where I also developed and learned to nurture a great love and admiration for architecture and art history. The work seen here was mostly created during the past seven years—some of the pieces are decades older. At the time of this writing there are 130 or so images. There are many more pieces to be posted including paintings, sculpture, assemblages, drawings, and photographs, with new work occurring all the time.
