About The Artwork

This work was conceived as a conceptual piece, with the objective being an exploration of quasi-symmetry or conceptual symmetry - a symmetry of compositional elements rather than a literal or proportional symmetry. In some senses, part of the symmetry is an inverse symmetry. The title of the work, "Chambers", alludes to the work being divided into two separate chambers, a left chamber, and a right chamber, separated from one another by a stark red divider line, stylized to appear as a stitched ribbon or band. The symmetry of the two chambers consists of the following aspects: 1) Each chamber comprises stylized elements of free calligraphy produced with metallic paint that is applied with a toothed silicon implement to produce an impasto texture. 2) The calligraphy elements in each chamber are "framed" by ribbons on either side, and each of the ribbons contains further free-form calligraphy, flowing in opposite directions from opposite ends of the ribbons. 3) The background / base for each chamber contains a lined texture. The inverse symmetry or complementary symmetry of the two chambers consists of the following aspects: 1) The left chamber is produced in warm tones (gold metallic over browns), whereas the right chamber is produced in cool tones (silver metallic over blues and with green embellishments). 2) The left chamber is arranged vertically, whereas the right chamber is arranged horizontally. 3) The lines in the background of the left chamber are arranged diagonally and straight (masculine), whereas the lines in the background of the right chamber are arranged in a fluid and flowing manner (feminine). 4) The left chamber is small, whereas the right chamber is large. 5) The central calligraphy in the left chamber hints at plurality or subordination, whereas the central calligraphy in the right chamber hints at singularity or primacy. Overall, the work is vaguely evocative of a yin and yang representation, contrasting masculine qualities (left chamber) with feminine qualities (right chamber).
