About The Artwork

Charlie Chaplin is a favorite subject of mine. Not only because his appeal is worldwide, but because I love his genius creativity. This painting was inspired from the movie "Gold Rush" where he is inside a log cabin about to slide off a cliff after trekking through heavy snow. I wanted to depict him in color rather than as we traditionally know him in black and white. Most people don't realize that Chaplin had blue eyes. The silhouette of Charlie looking over his shoulder represents the character's naive curiosity. "The little tramp", as he was endearingly referred to, always unwittingly found himself in a comical dilemma. Hopefully, this painting is a reminder of his happy-go-lucky attitude and the beautiful song he wrote "Smile".

American artist Marlene Carroll Couri is known for her innovative depictions of pop art characters. Internationally collected, her early creative visual experiences include ballet, fashion model, fashion instructor, modeling agency owner, fashion show choreographer/coordinator. Her artistic focus completely transformed when she picked up a paint brush in the 1990s. Amazingly, she is self taught. Marlene's primary subjects include historical figures, celebrities, national icons, advertising and cartoon characters, as well as popular toys. "My work is all about nostalgia.... positive, life-affirming images.” Her unique approach adds a sense of whimsy and innocence often incorporating serious underlying themes and/or paying homage to culturally significant figures. Many of Marlene's paintings are in private and corporate collections around the world.
