About The Artwork

This painting won The Gordon Hulson Memorial Prize for Draughtsmanship, Variety & Exploration at the RBA 2014 I was super struck by the balance of the artificial light of the petrol station and the evening dusk. The shelves of the station mini market were bare and the attendant was clearing up. I was the last customer of the last day. The next day demolition began.

Tim Goffe gained his BA Hons in Fine Art at Brighton and Photography at the PCL. Establishing himself as a photographer in London he worked in several industries including film, advertising, publishing, design, architecture and latterly fine art. His photographs have been exhibited and collected world wide.  He has always studied and practiced painting and has only began exhibiting his paintings in 2010 after studying With Colin Orchard in St Ives Cornwall "I don't ever set out to paint or draw a particular subject. My sketch book and camera are always at hand. I record everything of interest. A picture might stay in a sketch book or a photograph stay on a computer but other times it will develop into a painting.  Sometimes themes appear and develop. I might be inspired by a particular location, time of day or a certain light or an idea such the de-industrialisation of the riverside or the decaying coast." The reason and the meaning are not the starting point. The reason to paint is to find the meaning.   "In both painting and photography light is the trigger and the goal is to convey a feeling of what it was like to be there, at that moment. I look for beauty in the ugly and meaning in the banal "
