About The Artwork

"Coming Ashore" is one of a series of paintings inspired by a residency on King Island, in the middle of Bass Strait, between Tasmania and mainland Australia. A low, rocky island in the path of the Roaring Forties, it is notorious for the number of disastrous shipwrecks on its shores. This is a painting of a group of shocked, confused survivors who have dragged themselves ashore, and are just about to start wondering what they will do next. It was also an excuse to paint a wide-eyed child clutching a teddy bear.

I live in Tasmania, which is about as far away as you can get from everywhere else, and spend as much time as possible in the wilderness - primeval forests are good for the soul. Landscape here is old and weathered and rugged with plenty of rocky mountains and mysterious valleys. Both the scenery and history get described as gothic quite regularly, so that's what I paint. Tasmanian Gothic.
