About The Artwork

Part of a recent series which alluded to landscape but in a portrait format. Arising from a series of sketches and improvised gestures, I wanted to see what could be achieved with a highly restricted palette, and a variety of textures and methods of application. I wanted the picture to have an identity and presence. This is the beginning of a current series in which I have gone on to limit the picture plane to the confines of the frame. In later works, there is no allusion to an illusory plane extending beyond the frame. An influence in terms of methodology would be the work of postwar British painters. This image is part of a recent series which alluded to landscape but in a portrait format. Arising from a series of sketches and improvised gestures, I wanted to see what could be achieved with a highly restricted palette, and a variety of textures and methods of application. I wanted the picture to have an identity and presence. There are sections of the same colour but are defined by texture. I wanted to utilize biomorphic shapes or units of shapes which can be utilised to create dialogues within pictorial space. Some shapes suggest movement which can relate to ideas about nature, energy or transformation, unity or separation. The process is like a dialogue and I lose myself in a meditative state. Forms are developed through play. There is a great deal of adjustment and reworking after the initial free start. However, I find this process more direct than the manipulation of a figurative image in order to illustrate an emotion. I am more concerned with the feeling of a work than with the correctness of depiction and execution. I stop when it feels right.

I paint the pictures that I would like to see: merged abstract and figurative modes with a story or a definite image and an identity. I like to create spaces in which something abstract can happen. My pictures are truly abstract in that they often start out a lot more detailed and figurative than they wind up. Landscapes, objects and figures get colors, forms and details abstracted from until I get an enigmatic image that I can live with.
