About The Artwork

I enjoy how light is able to at the same time make them seem dense solid, ephemeral, and yet tenuous and light. At certain times the way they interact gives the perception that solidity and light are in flux, interchangable. This kind of appeals to my understanding that the Universe can be described as a self organised void, and indeed that what we take for solid is really mostly empty space filled with various forces such as the electro magnetic repulsive force between say your hand resting, on a table....that matter is merely condenced energy....energy in a lower energy state this is interesting. It speaks to a prospero like illusion or as guy sircello put it we view the world through senses that provide us with only a 'radically limited access to reality' So then there is the way explore and broaden the perception or interpretation of what I see. The background blue in one sense might represent the self organised void which is not to say that the clouds, sun, Moon, and in the case of this painting the conjunction with Jupiter and Saturn..... are not also a part of the same. I enjoy that this questions my senses and my understanding of reality I like the contrast in this.....It speaks to both knowing and unknown. Mmmmm I am once again reminded of William Blakes augaries of inocence....and of Weldrake. Also they are as always incomplete in the same way that nature is.....The building up of the layers is a metaphor if you like for the passage of time and so also speaks to the process of painting and of asking questions that words cannot fully encode. It is also rooted in reality and perhaps the most important question that my work raises is to address the delusion of religeous belief.....

I was born in lancaster Feb 15th 1963 my hobbies include astronomy, long distance cycle touring, mountaineering and snowboarding, which is where I get the inspiration to paint. I live and cycle and paint and draw with my family in Cornwall. As far back as I can remember I have been fascinated by nature from watching atlantic storms, wildlife, thunderstorms to observing the universe through a telescope, drawing the Moon, planets galaxies and always being a part of the experience through drawing and painting, cycling and mountaineering. Having this constant interaction with nature has had a profound effect on my philosophical outlook. I view the emergence of consciousness as the universe become self aware that there is a deep and profound interconnection between consciousness and nature. There is a creative energy to the way the sea, the land, the atmosphere, the artist interact, and light, it seems to me that there is the light of nature and the light of consciousness through which we explore the world through a dynamic and creative relationship between our conscious selves and natue. However I do not view the light of mind and the light of nature as separate creations but as natural phenomena emerging through the natural evolution of the universe and the laws of nature. So I paint the creative fluid interaction between nature and mind.
