About The Artwork

In Sanskrit the term lila or ‘the divine play’, is used to describe the often unpredictable, hidden energies or the unseen laws of nature that control, modulate and sustain our daily lives. In the Hindu worldview it is believed that any act of creation or art form utilizes these unpredictable energies, cultivating them into a restricted portion of time and space that is in a constant dynamic state, where the unseen can be revealed. Lila is viewed as the journey of the soul, both joyous and dramatic; it is an elaborate, fickle and continually absorbing game for all participants. This series, ‘Crossing the Waters’ attempts to describe part of this journey, and the hidden energies and unseen laws of nature, which control, modulate and sustain our ordinary lives.

Meredith Russell (B.A. Fine Art., M.A. Visual Art, Adv.Dip. Live Design) Meredith is a visual artist working, teaching and exhibiting in a variety of media in visual and performing arts. During this time, she has progressively explored the dynamic energy associated with movement of the human form in space, and this has led to a fascination and passion for modern dance as a focal point for visual expression. This relationship with dance and performance has enabled her to work with choreographers, musicians and artists in a collaborative working environment, integrating collective skills into meaningful performances. Her previous work utilised her research in traditional Indian dance theories of movement and space as they apply to "˜place-making' in post-modern dance. This led to her role of artistic director for the community event "˜Circling the Square' enabling her to combine her passion for visual and performing arts. Recently, she completed studies for an "˜Advanced Diploma in Live Design for Theatre and Event', giving her the opportunity to further explore the role of theatre and art practice, and continues to integrate both disciplines into her work.
