While painting this, I was imagining sitting in a villa along the Mediterranean, and overlooking and absorbing the serenity of the landscape. I think we are always looking for that serenity that is just beyond our reach. Does the dwelling provide us with an opportunity to see the beauty or does it keep us from being part of it?

I grew up in the American Southwest, exposed to desert landscapes and modern architecture. My father, a civil engineer, took me on tours of jails and prisons in my youth simultaneous to my religious, celestial grooming in enclosed institutions. This exposure to vast landscapes and constrained, invasive dwellings continues to shape my artistic career. I am intrigued by the contradiction of being in a place yet not being the place, that there is always a link and separation between structure and freedom.
