About The Artwork

The Romantic painter George Inness wrote about his experience of merging with the landscape while painting it. I imagine this mysterious description as becoming almost transparent to the surrounding environment - disappearing. For me, this painting was a way of reflecting on Inness' descriptions. Bighorn sheep are elusive, but they are also big, physically powerful animals. I wanted to contrast this association with the feeling of becoming transparent and weightless; Merging with the surrounding space. This painting is made on cotton canvas with thin coats of pigment. Parts of the canvas are left bare, as if the image is disappearing.

Henrik Soderstrom is an artist, designer, and idea enthusiast. Raised in Rochester NY by an exuberant Californian musician and a Swedish visionary, he grew up sanding beautiful historic floorboards and eating green peppers like apples from the vegetable garden. After absorbing inspiration and general excitement about life at the Rhode Island School of Design, he went on to design the set design for the Silk Road Ensemble's production of Leyli & Majnun, which opened in 2009 at the Lincoln Center in New York under the artistic direction of Yo-Yo Ma. Henrik has enjoyed collaborating with the Society for Freshwater Science, the Music of Difference Project (whose album was nominated for a grammy in 2011), the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History, and FuturPointe dance to produce shows and performances.
