About The Artwork

This painting captures the Scottish sense of humour. The Duke of Welington Equestrian Statue, sculpted by Italian artist Carlo Marochetti and erected in 1844, is sited outside the Gallery Of Modern Art in Queen Street, Glasgow. For all the pomp and circumstance of this illustrious bronze horse and rider (Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke Of Wellington), I have never seen the 'Duke' without his jaunty hat, ie, Traffic Cone. It's something of a tradition for revellers to climb the statue and pop a cone on his head - at least it keeps the rain off him. Glasgow City Council used to remove it regularly, but it was costing too much, so they have now embraced the traffic cone hat, and on special occasions they will replace it with a rainbow coloured one for Gay Pride marches, or Gold coloured for the Commonwealth Games. I would say that along with 'La Pasionara', and the recent 'Mary Barbour' statue, The 'Duke' shows the spirit of Glasgow. Whilst the two aforementioned statues display the fighting spirit of 'Red' Clydeside, the 'Duke' shows the heartwarming fun side of the Glaswegians - an ability to laugh at themselves, and not take life too seriously. I probably will never see the Duke without his hat. What I have seen, however, is people falling in love beside the statue, bairns sitting on the plinth eating fish and chips, and even on two separate Christmas Eves, men dressed as Santa getting 'lifted' off the noble steed by the police. My artwork itself has been painted on canvas and comes unframed.
