As a matter of pure function, a lighthouse is a tower or building that consistently projects a light out to nearby waters in order to help ships navigate safely around difficult coastlines and challenging waterways. There are now essentially no lighthouse keepers, though; most lighthouses today are automated. Many others have been demolished after deteriorating beyond repair, and technological advances have improved navigational systems. Of course, for many people around the world—myself included—lighthouses are much more than that. They serve as sources of inspiration and fascination, markers of special and unique places, romantic links to the mysterious sea, and to a time since passed. Most of the approximately 700 remaining were built in the 19th century, so they've been with us for generations. And as their beacons call to vessels, their formidable presence calls to millions of us. And we come. One of the lights I've visited most is the East Chop Light on Martha's Vineyard. It's not much different from many New England lighthouses, and the grounds around it are spartan. Yet it will always remain a favorite for a variety of reasons, many deeply personal. This is "East Chop Dusk." I can say with confidence that unlike the lighthouse itself, the light in the painting does not go on and off every few seconds. I've watched as it hangs on my gallery wall. You see, for now, I am the lighthouse keeper.

born: 1958 Troy NY, USA David Arsenault was first captivated by art in 1970 when he discovered a reproduction of Edward Hopper's painting "Gas" in a grade school library book. However, it wasn't until the early 1990s--more than twenty years later--that a professor in his graphic arts program reintroduced him to Hopper's work and he decided to study painting. The early influence had it's effect on him to the degree that The Wall Street Journal wrote that "Some of Mr. Arsenault's paintings could pass for works by Edward Hopper." He studied painting at the University at Albany (NY). Since 1993 when he first began showing, David has had or participated in well over one hundred fifty local, regional, and national exhibitions. He has shown in New York, Chicago, on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, throughout upstate New York, and now in Rockport, Massachusetts at his gallery, The Art of David Arsenault. His oil paintings, giclee prints, and reproductions are found in private and corporate collections around the world. Arsenault became a juried member of the Rockport Art Association in 2015. He and his wife relocated to the seaside town of Rockport, Massachusetts in November of 2014; in March of 2015 they opened The Art of David Arsenault Gallery; now in it's seventh year of existence, it resides at 8 Dock Square in the historic downtown Cultural District. His work is best known for large shapes, dramatic lighting, and strong color, which creates a compelling sense of mood, time, and place. Each piece presents a quiet exploration of everyday life. Arsenault strives to describe instants of shared human experience by expressing the transformational qualities of light, a sense of deeply personal encounters, and the elusive moment frozen in time.
