Jaca is a nice small town of the Aragon High-Pyrenees, where in summer we often make a stop in our tourist mountain itinerary. Famous for is fortified Citadel, very similar to the other one in Palmanova, close to Udine, which was on 1985 the subject of a competition organized by the Architecture Biennale of Venice directed by Aldo Rossi, which I attended with a design I steel really love. In the large moat of the Jaca’s star-shaped wall freely walk around on the green grass a great herd of beautiful deer. Deer, with reindeer and elk, are animals of fairy tale. It’s enchanting. I remember early in the morning, in a motel of a Natural Park in the mountains between Seattle and San Francisco, when I got out to piss in the bushes. While I was there, I felt a presence. I turned around and there was a wonderful deer looking at me. A moment and disappeared. The deer’s tales start from Rudolph and the reindeer flying on the Christmas sky the Santa Claus sleigh, until the Bambi’s Disneyland story. Looking for deer’s images in Google, I bumped into an article indignantly informing about the carnage of more than 500 deer at the hands of a group of bloody Spanish hunters, gathered by a specialized agency from Badajoz, the capital of the Spanish Estremadura, in a Portuguese farm, not far from Lisboa. Spanish citizens, they had to be: a people tragically well represented in the “Black Paintings” by Francisco Goya. I dedicate this work to the sad memory of all the poor animals slaughtered by that bunch of murderers.
