A friend once said, “You only paint Adam & Eve because it gives you an excuse to paint rude pictures.” He was probably right. Anyway I’ve been painting them all my life, and my first exhibition in Melbourne, Australia, in the ninetees was called “Adam & Eve and Other Nudes.” It was delightfully successful, reviewed in the Melbourne Age, and I sold quite a few nudes. Since then I’ve painted them many, many times, and just when I think I’m finished with them, they pop back into my head once more, demanding attention. So here’s the subject again, but with a slight variation. It’s Eve with someone else. However, there are no prizes for working out who the male masquerading as Adam really is; If you want a clue, he’s not a painting, and he’s by Miclelangelo. Obviously the male—female contrast interests me as usual, but also Michelangelo’s amazingly lifelike marble, which I’ve contrasted against the sensual female form. The question arises: Have nudes always been painted to tittilate, acting as a mild form of pornography to some degree or other and as far back as painting has been practiced? I think the answer is probably “Yes”.

France
Bonjour. I'm Ray Johnstone, and I live in a small medieval village in south west France. I spend most of my time painting, writing and teaching art, but I still find time to play petanque most afternoons (the game they play with iron balls all over France). I firmly believe that everyone - yes, everyone - can learn to paint and draw, and I teach children and adults, as well as individuals, families and groups. (For more information about art holidays, simply cut and paste the following: ’Ray Johnstone France’). If you’d like a quote on any painting you might like to think about commissioning me to do, please email me the details. (Please keep in mind that I can paint almost any subject FROM A PHOTOGRAPH). I’ll get back to you right away.
