About The Artwork

This work continues to explore my interest in the meditative qualities of durational painting. Multiple layers of paint are applied to a wooden surface and when the last layer has dried, I return to the surface to 'excavate' the paint with a sharp knife. Working methodically from the inner centre the circlular gouges reveal what is beneath the surface. The systematic repetition of the marks and the inability of the human hand to perfectly replicate itself produces rhythms and patterns both internal and external that can never to fully predicted. It is this very unpredictability that brings me most satisfaction - it is only when I step back from the work that I fully appreciated what has been made. I owe a huge dept to the early work of Kusama, whose early pieces in the 'net' series remain an inspiration. The 'excavated' paintings hover somewhere between 2 and 3d.
