Every year Ginny and I go up to London to stay in an hotel. We go to see art and to eat out and to drink in bars. We go to large department stores and may hang out all day in Harrods and Selfridges. Most of all though we go to sit in Liberty. Last year there was a big Moroccan display in the furniture department on the top floor. Of all the floors we like this the best and have been sitting in furniture there for thirty years. When I am in Liberty I am painting the souk. I am soaking up colours and sights, sounds and smells. Soak the souk... imbibe the vibe... get the picture. A flight of fancy, a magic carpet, an Orient express. Casablanca. Marrakech, Fez. Moroccan souk. My paintings are imagined rather than observed. They are expressive and colourful. It's all about the painting process, applying colour, using texture, making marks. the texture on the surface. The paintings develop over time. They may appear finished at one point but then later are reworked. The work you like may have been several other versions during its lifetime. My enduring influences are many but include mostly Turner, Rembrandt and Rothko. All my paintings are painted around the edges and therefore may not need framing.
