About The Artwork

This painting is part of a series of vertical landscapes inspired by the forest behind my house. I love how each season is expressed through the changing colors and textures of the forest, providing an ever-changing picture to witness. I hope that viewers of my work are able to connect with this forest imagery and recollect a moment when the allure of a forest drew them closer to nature. I have chosen to work on 140 lb. Arches hot-press watercolor paper for this series, which provides a wonderfully smooth and sensitive surface for working with acrylic paints. I start each painting with a very wet mixture of water and paint, which allows for a loose and gestural approach in the initial stages of the painting. Once I've captured the basic composition with this loose, drippy brushwork, I add more detail with a less watery application of paint, all while trying to maintain the energy of the initial expressive brushwork. Trying to maintain a balance between a detailed representation of the forest and a certain degree of abstraction is the ultimate goal of the work.
