FORMATION is a series of process-based paintings that combine abstract languages of mark making while alluding to the color striations and textures of natural rock formations. Rainbows moving in rhythmic passages glide over sludge. Saturate color asserts itself in each new layer silhouetting the beginnings of mountains, separating earth from sky. Each image hovers between surface abstraction and the illusion of landscape.

Jonathan Herbert is a professional fine artist who has worked continuously for over 45 years. A graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, Herbert’s portrait John Carlson, 24 x 24 inches, oil on linen, 1972, is the first known example of Neo-Expressionism in the USA. Since then, his work has spanned media from the classical to the digital. Herbert has painted, created provocative photography, and is one of the original founders of the digital art revolution. Herbert, over a life-long career, has painted in oils and acrylics, on linen and canvas. He has created innumerable works on paper. His works ranges from representational to abstract. His outpouring of work has intentionally defied branding. Herbert has exhibited since the 70s. His artwork has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and cultural centers throughout the United States. Herbert’s paintings and works on paper are in private and corporate collections, including those of Pfizer Inc., and Kirkland & Ellis LLP. His photographic work is in the collection of the Kinsey Museum in the Midwest. Since relocating to Sarasota in late 2015 to establish his Gillespie Park Studio, Herbert continues to create powerful abstract and representational works of art.
